Chelsea ready to spend £250m to sign this quartet: Real Madrid & Bayern Munich stars linked with Stamford Bridge transfersPublished January 26, 2017
Chelsea are weighing up bids worth in the region of a combined £250 million for some of the continent’s biggest stars as they aim to make a statement in the transfer market.
Backed by owner Roman Abramovich, the cash-flush west Londoners have money to spend in the coming windows, and are understood to be targeting a quartet of additions to strengthen their squad ahead of a potential appearance in next season’s Champions League.
According to reports today, Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, Bayern Munich’s Arturo Vidal, Atalanta’s Franck Kessie and AC Milan’s Diego Lopez have all been shortlisted by Blues officials with a view to potential bids.
Spanish publication MARCA claims that both Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in signing Bale in a deal worth around £172 million. The Welshman has dazzled for Real since his £86m move from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2013, winning two Champions League trophies and the Club World Cup during his time in the Spanish capital.
Bale recently signed a lucrative contract extension to keep him at the Bernabeu long-term, but this has not deterred the Premier League duo, who are both in need of a pacey forward to add to their ranks.
The La Liga side would no doubt be loath to lose a key player, and so it would take a monumental offer to convince them to sell over the close season.
Chilean midfielder Vidal is another linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in today’s gossip columns, with El Mercurio (via the Telegraph) suggesting that the aggressive ball-winner is a summer target for the Blues.
Valued in the region of £56m by Bayern, the 29-year-old certainly wouldn’t come cheap, but would add depth to a squad that has recently lost John Obi Mikel to the Chinese Super League.
Elsewhere, the Daily star writes that highly-rated Ivorian youngster Kessie has already been the subject of a failed £27m offer from Chelsea chiefs, who are still locked in negotiations with Serie A surprise package Atalanta over the powerful box-to-box midfielder.
Kessie, 20, has enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign in Italy and is also wanted by Juventus, Liverpool and Everton, amongst others, after netting seven goals for the Nerazzurri before Christmas.
All indications are that a fee in excess of £30m could tempt Atalanta to sell their prized asset, although such a deal is much more likely to take place in the summer, as Kessie is currently away at the AFCON with his country.
Veteran stopper Lopez, meanwhile, has emerged as a potential replacement for the outgoing Asmir Begovic, who is weighing up a move to Bournemouth. Currently on loan at Espanyol from AC Milan, the 35-year-old Spaniard counts Real Madrid and Sevilla among his former employers and would provide able back-up to Thibaut Courtois.
Chelsea are next in action on Saturday, when they face Brentford at home in the FA Cup fourth round.
