Chelsea and Man United set to battle it out for £35 million Germany defenderPublished October 25, 2016
Days after clashing at Stamford Bridge, Manchester United are set to battle Chelsea again – and this time it will be a closer affair. For when it comes to financial matters, United have proven they can go toe-to-toe with any rival. If only they were as an intimidating on the pitch. Well, if they win this transfer tussle then they could be.
Or at least that’s the hope for Jose Mourinho. It’s ironic that Chelsea’s brutal 4-0 beating of the Red Devils could lead to them losing out in the race for Antonio Rudiger. Chris Smalling’s shortcomings were laid bare with a truly hapless performance at centre-back. The highlight reel of that game could be used in a case against keeping the England international as a first choice defender. He’s got some serious ground to make up.
Roma defender Rudiger has been a target for Chelsea for several months. A Germany international valued at £35 million, he’s regarded as one of the best up-and-coming defenders on the continent. Antonio Conte thinks he would be perfect for his 3-4-3 formation. The 23-year-old could spark a bidding war with the Daily Mail reporting that Manchester City are also eyeing him up.
After months out injured, Rudiger will be keen to make up for lost time.
