Chelsea legend Claude Makelele makes shock return to the Premier LeaguePublished January 11, 2017
Chelsea legend Claude Makelele has made a shock return to the Premier League. The retired French midfielder has rocked up at Swansea to be a part of new boss Paul Clement’s backroom staff. Clement has overhauled the coaching team who will be working alongside him. He knows that he has his work cut out for him with Swansea 19th in the table.
Makelele and Clement will work alongside Nigel Gibbs and Karl Halabi, as well as goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts. Makelele had an extremely decorated career but it was only when he left Real Madrid that the full extent of his talents were appreciated. He joined Chelsea in 2003 and over the next five years would boss the holding midfield role so thoroughly that it’s referred to as the Makelele role to this day.
Clement was a part of the Chelsea coaching staff during Makelele’s playing days and linked up with him again when they were both assistants to Carlo Ancelotti at Paris Saint-Germain. Like Clement, Makelele’s first senior management role didn’t go swimmingly. He only lasted a matter of months at Bastia in 2014. This is his first coaching role since that dismissal.
