Chelsea launch stunning £72m bid for Real Madrid starPublished August 6, 2016
Chelsea are believed to have made an offer of £72m for Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodriguez.
The Marca claim a Premier League outfit has put in a big money bid for the Colombian international and though Manchester United and West Ham are known to be keen on the 25-year-old it’s most likely that the Blues have made a concrete bid.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has made it clear that his Old Trafford side will bring in one further addition this summer and most sources believe that player to be a certain Paul Pogba, the Juventus man set to cost the club a world-record fee in excess of £100m.
West Ham are certainly interested in Rodriguez but are unable to make such a grandiose offer though it’s true the Hammers are in a strong financial position, having moved into London’s Olympic Stadium, Slaven Bilic has set his sights on more realistic targets.
Rodriguez left AS Monaco for the Spanish capital in July 2014 and has proven something of a disappointment and it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if Zinedine Zidane opted to cash in on the player.
In his first season at the Spanish giants Rodriguez racked up 13 goals and 13 assists in 29 La Liga starts, a solid return for a debut campaign, however he didn’t fare so well in his second campaign.
Last season he started just 17 La Liga fixtures and made just three starts in Champions League action, and may now be open to a fresh challenge.
A move to Chelsea could tempt Rodriguez though he’d seek some sort of guarantee with regards to a prominent role in Conte’s plans.
Conte has already forked out over £60m to bring in Michy Batshuayi and N’Golo Kante and the West London side are also said to be pushing to re-sign Everton forward Romelu Lukaku as Chelsea look to get back to winning ways after last season’s disastrous tenth place finish.
