Chelsea chase Champions League hero Saul Niguez: Antonio Conte wants Atletico Madrid star to be first Blues signingPublished April 28, 2016
Incoming Chelsea boss Antonio Conte will look to lure Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez to Stamford Bridge this sumemr.
Conte will take over from Guus Hiddink after Euro 2016, where he will lead the Italian national team at the finals, and the former Juventus manager is already planning ahead as he seeks to strengthen a Chelsea squad that failed miserably this season.
Chelsea won the Premier League title in 2014/15 and were installed as favourites to secure another championship this term but things have not panned out that way.
Jose Mourinho’s side hit a wretched run of form and was subsequently axed and whilst Hiddink has steadied the ship the West London side are set to finish outside the top eight.
21-year-old Spaniard Niguez has impressed greatly at Atletico Madrid this term and his superb solo effort against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night may well have added a few more million to his price-tag but this won’t scare off Chelsea.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone may well fear that Chelsea will once again conduct a transfer raid of the La Liga title challengers, having successfully brought in the likes of Diego Costa and Felipe Luiz in recent seasons, albeit Luiz did return to the Spanish capital last summer.
Niguez is a very versatile midifeld presence, capable of getting stuck in as well as providing a real attacking option to boot.
The Spanish Under-21 international may just sneak into Vicente del Bosque’s Euro 2016 squad given the youngsters superb run of form in recent weeks and months.
