In case you spent your weekend having one too many, you may have not yet heard the news that Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has failed a drug test.

The 26-year-old was suspended by Liverpool over the weekend, after he tested positive for banned fat burners and the club have confirmed that the 26-year-old won’t be available for selection until the issue is resolved, with rumours suggesting that the defender could be facing a lengthy ban.

The investigation is in relation to a test carried out by UEFA prior to the Reds’ Europa League second-leg tie at Manchester United on March 17.

What makes things slightly comedic at the Merseyside club, is that the defender who is set to stand in for the Frenchman, is none other than Kolo Toure, who himself was suspended for six months back in 2011, after failing a drugs test while at former club Manchester City.

Reacting to the news of his teammates plight, Toure has come out in defence of Mamadou Sakho, and whilst the 35-year-old admits he has not spoken to the French defender regarding his situation, the Ivorian has backed his teammate to come through the whole ordeal.

In light of Kolo Toure’s recent defence of his Anfield colleague, football fans have taken to Twitter to have a laugh at both the Ivorian and Mamadou Sakho’s expense.
