Barcelona want £115m Premier League trio: Man United and Arsenal stars firmly on Nou Camp wish-list
Barcelona’s interest in the Premier League is about to increase, with new Blaugrana boss Ernesto Valverde keen to bring three stars of English football to the Camp Nou this summer.
Valverde has a sizeable task on his hands to repair an ageing squad ready to challenge Real Madrid in both LaLiga and the Champions League next season. The former Athletic Bilbao boss replaces Luis Enrique, who won two league titles and one European crown in three seasons in charge.
With Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Andres Iniesta, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi all now north of 30, the squad may need freshening up, and with the golden age of the club’s fabled youth academy, La Masia, now passed, Valverde and Barça will have to look elsewhere for any new signings.
Three players are in mind, per Goal. Firstly, Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, who worked with Valverde during his first spell at Athletic; Herrera is a man who has only recently began to shine through at Old Trafford. But with Jose Mourinho said to be keen on signing a new player in the middle of the park, the Spaniard could be available and interested in s reunion with Valverde, but both Arda Turan and Andre Gomes may need to be sold first to make room in the squad.
Riyad Mahrez is another name constantly linked with a move to Catalunya. The 2016 PFA Player of the Year, an award which he won after helping Leicester to their historic Premier League title win that season, has informed the Foxes of his desire to leave. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur could provide competition, but a certain Lionel Messi has reportedly endorsed Mahrez, which could prove the deciding factor.
Last, but most definitely not least, is Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin. A Barcelona native, having left for England aged 16, Bellerin may be at his most attainable this summer, given that he has alluded to concerns over his family moving back to Spain recently. Arsenal also missed out on the Champions League last season, which could also see Bellerin’s head turn.
Barcelona have never completely replaced Dani Alves at right-back, after the Brazilian departed a year ago. Sergi Roberto was deployed in that role by Luis Enrique, but if they want a specialist, they should look no further than Bellerin.
