Arsenal star denies rumours surrounding teammate
Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has leapt to the defence of teammate Alexis Sanchez, branding accusations the Chilean was laughing on the bench as his side wee getting beaten 5-1 by Bayern Munich ‘disrespectful’, per Sky.
The Gunners were humiliated in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie by the same scoreline as in the first leg, resulting in a 10-2 aggregate defeat.
Speculation that Sanchez is not committed to the club has intensified since that game, after Sanchez appeared to have a smile on his face when sat on the bench next to Cech, but the latter says the 28-year-old felt the pain as much as anyone.
“It is sad and he was as sad as I have seen him,” the goalkeeper said. “Unfortunately when you say the sentence, ‘had we scored the second goal everything could look different’ and then you do ‘ooph’ [exhale] you know, but in the end the reality is you are 5-1 down and somebody twists it and says you are laughing on the bench.
“I found it very disrespectful to the player. But obviously you can take the picture and you can interpret it the way you want unfortunately.
“But we the players, we know exactly what he said and we know how he was hurting and he was as disappointed as anybody else. It is unfortunate and disappointing.”
Sanchez has under 18 months to run on his contract, and with the club battling to qualify for the Champions League next season, it is far from certain he will stay beyond the summer.
