Arsenal to make shock bid to re-sign £15m defender as Arsene Wenger ponders fresh summer transferPublished August 2, 2016
Catalan daily Sport claim Arsenal are taking a keen interest in Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian international left the Gunners for the Nou Camp back in August 2014 and injury and average form has restricted the 30-year-old to just seven La Liga starts in two seasons and Luis Enrique would presumably consider offers for the experienced campaigner.
AS Roma are also said to be keen on Vermaelen but a return to the Emirates Stadium could be of interest to the versatile performer, who can play at full-back and in the centre of the defence.
Vermaelen was club captain at points during his five seasons in North London, racking up 150 appearances for the Gunners before moving to Barcelona.
Arsene Wenger could do with strengthening his defence with Per Mertesacker out for an extensive period with injury, leaving Arsenal with the distinctly average Gabriel Paulista as the best partner for rock solid Laurent Koscielny.
