Arsenal give positive Ozil updatePublished January 13, 2017
Arsene Wenger remains relaxed over Mesut Ozil’s contractual situation, despite the German midfielder having less than 18 months to run on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium.
Talks over a contract extension are understood to have hit an impasse, with Ozil believed to be holding out for an improved salary of around £250,000 per week and Arsenal currently reluctant to pay such a hefty sum.
Reports earlier this week suggested that Ozil will wait until Wenger’s own future with the north Londoners is resolved before deciding whether or not to commit his future to the club.
However, in his press-conference ahead of tomorrow’s away game against Swansea City, the Frenchman insisted that not only was the midfielder’s situation not tied to his own, but that Gunners officials are also calm over the predicament.
“I think it has been a bit misinterpreted – he would like to know what is happening on the managerial front but that is not the main part of his decision,” he told reporters.
“There are many other ingredients in any negotiation and we will hopefully find a solution. I speak more with his agent on the contract than with him.
“Let’s not forget that we have 18 months to go and that is a long time in football. I am very relaxed.”
Ozil has made 140 appearances for the Gunners since his £40 million move from Real Madrid back in 2013, mustering 50 assists and 29 goals to become one of the Premier League’s leading creative lights.
A return to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu has been mooted in recent months, although such a switch is very much dependent on the outcome of contract negotiations- should he reject a new deal, the capital club may choose to cash in on him this summer.
Fifth-placed Arsenal head into this weekend’s game in south Wales needing a win to take them back into the top four in the table.
