Arsenal closing in on the signing of £30m German defender Shkodran MustafiPublished July 31, 2016
According to reports in Germany, Arsenal are in talks to sign Valencia’s German defender Shkodran Mustafi, as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his back-line before the start of the new season.
The Gunners are in somewhat of a defensive crisis, with Per Mertesacker rulled out of action for up to five months, with a knee injury, whilst Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista have been unable to join Arsene Wenger’s side for their pre-season tour of the US.
Mertesacker’s injury in particular, has led to calls for Arsene Wenger to spend big on a central defender this summer, and it looks like Wenger is finally ready to act by bringing the 24-year-old German to North London.
Sky Germany claim that there has been no official offer from the Gunners, but a bid is believed to be imminent, and whilst Mustafi has a release clause of £42.1m, Arsenal may be able to sign the defender for a fee of around £25m + add-ons.
Whilst we wait and see how this transfer story develops, the signing of the German centre-back would be a real welcomed addition for Arsenal fans.
Mustafi has won 12 caps for Germany since his debut in 2014, and impressed many during Euro 2016 in France, when called upon by Joachim Low.
The defender has also made 60 appearances for Valencia in La Liga, but now it looks very unlikely that the 24-year-old will make his 61st appearance in the Spain, with a move to the Premier League now looking close.
