Sandown Imperial Cup Betting Tip: Golden Spear to Win 9/2 with Skybet
Tony Martin’s stable hasn’t been firing on all cylinders of late by any means, but when he sends a horse over to England for a valuable handicap assignment it often pays to take note.
His Golden Spear looks a compelling contender to win the Matchbook Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle at 3.00pm at Sandown Park on Saturday.
A race worth £70,000, it the most valuable contest on the home isles this weekend and the last significant Cheltenham Festival trial, the winner will surely take their chance in a handicap at the festival if their mark is high enough, one interesting free bet for Cheltenham not to miss.
Golden Spear’s connections would like him to qualify for the Martin Pipe Conditionals Handicap Hurdle next week, but with him being so far down the handicap for that, it seems unlikely.
Nevertheless winning this race will be a suitable back up plan and the six-year-old has a terrific chance of doing just that on the back of a very eye-catching run at Leopardstown last time out.
In the Coral.ir Hurdle, Golden Spear went off a well supported 5/1 shot in a big field of twenty. Held up off the pace under a quiet ride from Denis O’Regan, he steadily made up ground and had he enjoyed a little more luck in running, would have almost won.
It was a highly promising effort nonetheless and with a mark of 124 he looks weighted to win a pot of this nature sooner rather than later.
Nicky Henderson is responsible for the second favourite Fixe Le Kap, a 138 rated five-year-old with lots of very useful form.
Top weight Air Horse One has to be respected given the form he’s in but does have a big burden to carry, while Kayf Blanco and Gassin Golf are consistent in this grade and capable of picking up any spare pieces if any of the more unexposed types fail to live up to the hype.
