Betfair In Detail
What is Betfair?
All bets on Betfair have been placed there by users who either want to have a bet in the normal way (back), or offer odds to other punters (lay).
Bets are matched between people with opposing views.

Why use Betfair?
• You can bet that an outcome will happen (back) or that it won't happen (LAY).
• You can choose the odds you want to play at
• You can bet whilst the game is in play.

Back or lay
When you "back" a selection (be it an individual, a team, horse, dog or other), you are betting that it will win. This is just like betting with conventional bookies.
When you "lay" it, you are betting against it winning. For example, if you're betting in a market on which team is going to win the Premiership and you lay Man Utd, you offer odds to other punters who wish to back Man Utd. If Man Utd don't win, then you pick up the backer's stake. If Man Utd wins, then you pay out. This is what bookmakers traditionally do.
You never know who you are betting against, your privacy and the confidentiality of your bets is maintained by Betfair's secure site.

Choose odds
With Betfair there is always a choice of what odds to accept. If you want better odds than are currently available, you can place an order for a better price, but be realistic because there has to be somebody prepared to lay the bet at those odds, and vice versa.
Take a look at the odds before a game and you will see them change as visitors back and lay their bets. The odds often improve nearer to the off, as there are more people in the market.

Commission
You do not pay tax at Betfair, and commission is only paid on your net winnings on each market. This is particularly beneficial if you have multiple bets on a single market such as the Premiership Winner market. Some of your bets may win, some may lose, however you only pay commission on your NET winnings. If your bets in a particular market amount to a net loss, you do not pay commission.
We offer a customer incentive scheme. You can receive a discount off the standard Market Base Rate dependent on how much you bet. The more you bet, the larger the discount you receive. This is known as your Discount Rate.

Fees for transferring funds to and from Betfair
To reflect Betfair's own charges, there is a 1.5% fee for all credit card deposits. There is NO fee for UK debit card deposits or withdrawals to any card. Deposits and withdrawals can also be made by cheque and bank transfer - there is a small fee for bank transfer withdrawals only. These fees are made by our bank and are not retained by Betfair.

• If a race is abandoned or otherwise declared void all bets on that race will be void, and in the event of a walkover all bets will be void.

Place Terms - UK Markets

• The number of winners in 'to be placed' markets is determined by the number of runners in the overnight declaration (less any known non-runners), according to the following scale:
- 5 - 7 runners 1st and 2nd
- 8 - 15 runners 1st, 2nd and 3rd
- 16+ runners (non-handicap) 1st, 2nd and 3rd
- 16+ runners (handicap) 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th
• Once opened, the number of winners in 'to be placed' markets will not be affected by further non-runners. If the situation occurs where the number of winners is equals to or is greater than the number of runners, all bets in this market will be void.

Winning Distance Bets

• Winning distances' bets are on the sum of the winning distances from each race on one particular day at a race meeting.
• The winning distance in a race will be the officially declared distance between the first two horses past the post that have completed the race and followed the correct course.
• For the purpose of this bet, the maximum distance on any individual race will be 12 lengths for Flat races and 30 lengths for National Hunt races. For distances below half a length, the following scale will be applied:
- Nose 0.05 length
- Short-head 0.1
- Head 0.2
- Short-neck 0.25
- Neck 0.3
• If a meeting has three or more races abandoned or declared void, then all 'winning distance' bets, except those that have been unconditionally determined, will be void.
• When only one or two races are abandoned or declared void, then 'winning distance' bets will be settled with a default distance used for each abandoned or void race. The distances are two lengths for Flat races and 10 lengths for National Hunt races.
• In the case of a Walkover the following distances will be applied:
- Flat: 5 lengths
- National Hunt: 12 lengths
• The sum of all the winning distances, based on these figures, will be rounded to the nearest whole number at the end of the day's racing (rounded up, if half) and bets will be settled on this result.

In-play markets

• Betting will continue as normal until the 'off' at which point all unmatched bets will be cancelled and the market will be turned in-play.
• There will be no further intervention by Betfair until the end of the race, at which point betting will be suspended and all unmatched bets will be cancelled.
• If a photo or a steward's enquiry is called the market will be re-opened as soon as possible.

Betfair Non-Runner Rule
• Betfair's non-runner rule is based on Tattersall's Rule 4 and relates to the adjustment of odds on matched bets when one or more horses in a race are declared non-runners.
• Any horse declared for a race which does not subsequently come under starter's orders is deemed to be a non-runner.
• Prior to all betting on a race, each horse is given a 'reduction factor', based on Betfair's estimate of each horse's chance of winning with reference to the racing press - this number can be viewed on the 'info' page for each horse on www.betfair.com or by asking the Telephone Desk. In general the higher the number the more fancied the horse.
• Reductions will be made to both win and place markets but applied differently, and horses will have a different reduction factor for each.
• As soon as Betfair becomes aware that a horse is a confirmed non-runner, the following will happen automatically:
- All matched bets on that horse will be void and the horse will be removed from the market.
-
In the Win market if the reduction factor of the non-runner is 2.5% or greater, the odds of all the matched bets on the remaining horses will be reduced by an amount equal to the non-runner's final reduction factor and all the unmatched bets to Lay any of the remaining horses will be cancelled. If the non-runner's reduction factor is less than 2.5% no reductions will be made and no unmatched bets will be cancelled.
- No reduction factors are applied to bets which are struck in-running.
- In the Place market the reduction factor of all non-runners will be applied and the odds of matched bets on the remaining horses will be reduced by an amount equal to the non-runner's final reduction factor. Only if the non-runners reduction factor is 4.0% or greater will all the unmatched bets to Lay any of the remaining horses will be cancelled.
- All the reduction factors on the remaining horses will be adjusted to reflect their improved chance of winning.
- In the event of a late withdrawal, Betfair reserve the right to remove the runner after completion of the race. In this case only those bets placed prior to the start of the race will be affected by a reduction factor. Reduction factors will not apply to in-running bets.
- In the event of a non-runner being removed from a race in error or due to incorrect information, Betfair will reinstate the runner and all bets associated with that runner. If the runner has an applicable reduction factor, all bets made between the time of withdrawal and reinstatement will be void. The reduction factor applied during this period will be reversed and the original prices will become valid.

How the Reductions are applied
• In the Win market, reductions will be made on the whole odds.
• For example: if the non-runner's final reduction factor is 25% the odds on all previously matched bets on other horses will be reduced by 25% - odds of 8.0 would become 6.0 etc. And these might be further reduced if another horse is subsequently declared a non-runner.
• In a Place market, reductions will be made to the win portion of the odds only, and not the stake.
• For example: if the non-runner's final reduction factor is 25% the win portion of the odds on all previously matched bets on the other horses will be reduced by 25% - odds of 8.0 would become 6.25. (8.0 is equivalent to 7-to-1 in traditional odds and the reduction is applied to the 7 only).

Dead Heat Rule

• The Dead Heat Rule applies to bets on an event when there are more winners than expected, or the result is a draw or tie and there is no such market offered.
• For each matched bet on a winning selection, the stake money is first reduced in proportion to the number of winners expected divided by the number of actual winners. The winnings are then paid to the successful backers on this 'reduced stake' (reduced stake x odds) and the remaining stake money is paid to the appropriate layers.
• For example, assume there is a dead heat for first place between three horses. 'Client A' has backed one of the winners for 300 at digital odds of 4.0 and 'Client B' has taken the other side of this bet. When the event is settled, the stake (300) is divided by the number of winners (3) to calculate the reduced stake (100) and the remainder given to the layer (200). The backer then receives the odds matched (4.0) multiplied by the reduced stake (4 x 100 = 400). In this example, Client A's net winnings are 100 (400 payout minus the original 300 stake), and Client B net losses are 100.
• Alternatively, this can be viewed as the full amount paid to the digital odds divided by the number of dead-heaters. In the above example this would be 300 paid to 4.0/3 making 400 payout and 100 net winnings.
• When the Dead Heat Rule is applied, determining whether a particular bet is a net winner or a net loser depends on the number of winners involved in the dead heat and the odds at which the bet was matched.
